Concept of smart card

smart card refers to a card unlike the previous M/S (Magnetic Strip) card, with IC (Integrated Circuit) Card Chip inside in COB (Chip on Board) form, which can carry out various functions by having EEPROM inside as storage area, security algorithm, card operating system (COS), and 8 bit, 16 bit or 32 bit microprocessor (MPU) having data storage and self-computing function. The composition of the Chip has the same basic principle as the composition of computers.

Inside the Chip, there is a S/W (applications, OS) with H/W (memory, CPU) as the base, and as various applications can be used in a computer, applications with complex functions can be operated in IC Card as well because there is a Chip inside enabling data memorizing and computation

The electronic money function being one the applications is the representative function, and the most widely used form of such is the transport card..

Smart card classifications and characteristics per type

Contactless card
